The correct sequence is to excavate the trench to depth, lower the trench box (shield) from above using a crane or hoe, and only then permit workers to enter the protected zone inside the box. Workers must never be in the trench while the wall is unprotected, because cave-ins occur with no warning. Dropping the box from a spoil pile damages the shield and the wall. Placing the shield at the surface and excavating around it does not work because the box must rest at the trench bottom to protect workers from lateral soil pressure across the full depth.

Loosening clamps for expansion has no engineering basis and creates the very failure the maintenance is meant to prevent.
