Which steel plate grade is the most common choice for carbon-steel pressure vessel shells?

  2. SA-516 Grade 70
  3. Plain cast iron
  4. SA-516 Grade 60

SA-516 Grade 70 is the standard carbon-steel plate for pressure vessels because its tensile range of 485 to 620 megapascals gives good strength with reliable weldability and notch toughness. Structural A36 is not a pressure grade, the Grade 60 variant is lower strength, and cast iron is brittle and unsuitable. The Grade 70 plate is the workhorse of vessel shells.
